Triumphant Year in Competitions
In their debut year, Aires Tropicales won three major music competitions:
First Prize
at the Willem Twee Chamber Music Contest in Den Bosch for their innovative program and precise performance.
Second Prize
at FIM Valencia, showcasing their mastery of Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles and Medaglia’s Belle Époque in South America.
Reached the finals of the Carlo Maria Giulini Competition in Bolzano, delivering over 90 minutes of music from memory.
Collaborations with Netflix and Vogue
In 2023, Aires Tropicales featured prominently in high-profile events:
Performed at the Netherlands’ famous Flower Parade on Netflix’s Bridgerton-themed float.
Played at the premiere of Queen Charlotte in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
Partnered with Vogue and artist Rimon for an exclusive event, performing in avant-garde fashion alongside series stars.
Debut CD Release
In December 2023, the group released their first CD, featuring Paquito de Rivera’s Suite Aires Tropicales. Their creative interpretation, with body percussion and singing, highlighted their signature style and cultural roots. Produced by 7 Mountain, the CD also features singer Sabra El Bahri-Khatri and pianist Martien Maas.
Podium Klassiek Performance
On Christmas 2023, Aires Tropicales starred as “Young Heroes” on the Netherlands’ premier music TV show, Podium Klassiek. Their live performance of Afro captivated audiences, celebrating their heritage and talent. This last Christmas on 2024, Aires Tropicales captivated the audience again with their version of Chan Chan from Buena Vista Social Club.
Semifinalists at Godmesch Competition
In October 2024, Aires Tropicales advanced to the semifinals of the Godmesch Competition with a thought-provoking performance on the influence of AI in art, created in collaboration with visual artist Isabella Calmet.
